July 31, 2023
Day 2,474

Thankful for:

A good day of working from home.

A day to help my parents move again.

Funny moments during a hard day of work.

My mom and I found a pair of tiny baby socks in her basket of sock laundry.

Patty named an old mop handle and gave it a personality.

My dad, Patty, and I lifted a really heavy freezer up the stairs and into a moving truck.

I saw several foxes today including a baby fox.

The end of a long day.

Moving out.

July 30, 2023
Day 2,473

Thankful for:

A good day of helping my parents move out of their house.

Hank. He's very cute and sweet and he provides love and kisses and cuddles often.

A caramel frappuccino. It was delicious. It was the first time I had caffeine in over 10 years. It gave the get and up go that I needed.

Late night drives back home.

A late night Wendy's run.

The feeling of getting into bed after a hot shower after a day of working and sweating.

Baby socks. My mom and I were laughing so hard at a pair of baby socks we found in a giant pile of sock laundry.

My parents. I'm very thankful for them.

Adelyn went to spend the night with her friend last night.

Tobin went to spend the night with Casey, Phia, and Odette.

I got to hang out and talk with my sister late last night because I forgot to give Tobin his medicine. It was fun to take a late night drive.

Patty's dogs, Tilly and Mook, are so sweet and lovey and cuddly. I loved petting them and loving on them last night.

Matt and I have plans to do something fun with the kids tomorrow.

Great Saturday!

July 22, 2023
Day 2,466

Thankful for:

A great Saturday with my kids.

We went to Seven Oaks Lavender Farm. We picked lots of free lavender.

It was really calming and relaxing to pick lavender stems.

Adelyn and I were sitting by one big bush and a big bumblebee came by. She immediately wanted to get up and leave, but I was able to show her that we could sit and be still and it wouldn't hurt us. After it left, she remarked how I was a calm person, and I don't think I've ever had a nicer compliment in my whole life. I don't feel like a calm person, but I sure am glad Adelyn can see me that way.

I took the kids to Cold Stone, and since my dad was in the area, we invited him to come for ice cream too. My dad got a chocolate peanut butter ice cream in a waffle cone. Tobin got sweet cream with white chocolate chips mixed in. Adelyn got coffee ice cream with white chocolate chips mixed in. I got just a plain sweet cream ice cream. It's my favorite. We had a nice time talking and visiting.

When we came home, I made fresh sourdough bread and homemade chicken soup for Matt's mom. We took it over and ate dinner with them. It was really nice to visit with Matt's mom, Steph, and Mario. We talked about all of our favorite foods at while we ate.

I came home and cleaned up the kitchen from all the baking and soup making. I didn't watch a show while I did it. I just cleaned up quietly and spent time thinking and praying.

A big mug of tea in bed with a favorite show to end the night.

Friday, July 21, 2023

A very good Friday.

July 21, 2023
Day 2,465

A good day of work.

A cool weather day that reminds me that fall is not far away.

Finding red, orange, and yellow leave on the driveway when I walk with Higbee and Matt.

Matt, Addy, and I watched AGT together. I love that show.

Cuddles from my kids and my husband and Higbee.

I made a nice dinner for my family.

The feeling of two days off to spend with my loves.

Our beautiful home. I love all of the things about my home. The way the floor feels under my feet. The smells. The feel of the kitchen counter under my hands. The way it is beautiful, comfortable, and cozy at the same time. It's a gift to all of us. I never knew I could love a home so much.

A fun day planned with my kids tomorrow.

Bread rising for baking tomorrow. I love when my kitchen smells like rising bread.

Matt's mom handed me a Reece's peanut butter cup pack while I was working. She always has goodies to give.

Tobin gave me lots of hugs and cuddles today.

We came home and had a nice dinner together.

We all went to bed early.

I'm going grocery shopping after work tomorrow.

Addy, Tobin, and I had ice cream with hot fudge and whipped cream on top to celebrate National Ice Cream Day. It was yesterday, but we still had to celebrate anyways!

Hollows, havens, and hope.

July 3, 2023
Day 2,447

I love watching America's Got Talent. Oh my goodness. What a fabulous show. I think the thing that I love the most about it is that it showcases the very best of people, and I don't mean their special talent. It is a show that brings out the best in people. Strangers from all over the world come together and are happy for another stranger after a good performance. Strangers laugh with each other. They cry with each other. Another person's sorrow becomes everyone's sorrow. Another person's joy becomes everyone's joy. That show shows the best of people, and it gives me hope for humanity. I'm not the kind of person that is always down about the world, but it feels heavy sometimes. It can feel hopeless. It can feel loveless. But when I watch America's Got Talent, I am reminded that there are lots of good people out there doing lots of good things.

Tonight, we watched an audition of a man who sang an original country song about his dad who died because of a drunk driver. It was beautiful, sad, and powerful. It reminded me of some words written by Katherine Applegate in her book Wishtree:

"I'm not just a tree, by the way. I'm a home. A community. Folks nest on my branches. Burrow between my roots. Lay eggs on my leaves. And then there are my hollows. Tree hollows--holes in a trunk or branch--are not uncommon, especially in trees like me who've been around awhile.

Hollows happen for many reasons. Woodpeckers. Fallen branches. Lightning. Disease. Burrowing insects.

Hollows are proof that something bad can become something good with enough time and care and hope."

Those words: "Hollows are proof that something bad can become something good with enough time and care and hope." Wow. Such wisdom hidden in the pages of a children's book. I know those words are true. When I think about a hollow in my own life, I think about River. I remember thinking that when she died, God had turned His back on me. I remember thinking I was being punished. I didn't know it at the time, but River's life had nothing to do with punishment and everything to do with blessings.

     It's like this:

No matter what I do, the hollow will always be there.

I can let it stay a wound and never let it heal. I can be like a dog nursing an injured paw and not let anyone touch it or look at it or get near it.

Or, I can make my hollow a haven for others. It can be a home and a safe place for someone else who is pain. I can shelter someone in their time of need and provide comfort where there is suffering.

I watched that man on America's Got Talent turn his hollow into something beautiful tonight. I watched as people cried and were moved by his words and his story. I watched the people in the audience hold onto the hope that floated off of every word he sang. Hope is so powerful. It turns hollows into havens.

Thankful for hollows, havens, and hope. Thankful tonight and every single night for my River Hope Sanderson. Thankful for tears: the happy ones and the ones that come when you remember someone very dear. Thankful for this space to write. I don't know what I would do without it. Thankful for powerful words. Thankful for people. Thankful for when I can see evidence of goodness and love in this world.
