The Difference Between Dreams and Defining Moments.

Project 365 * 2 -- Day 68

Matt and I went on a date last night. It was a sweet time with my love. And it's so funny, we get a chance to get out of the house, and spend some time to ourselves, and what do we do? We talk about our kids. Like, almost the whole time. We can't help it. We are so in love with them. But, on the way home, we started talking about our dream house.

This is how we both picture it: a beautiful, big house in the middle of the woods. On our own property of at least 10 acres. With a wrap around porch. With enough rocking chairs to accommodate at least 20 people. Double front doors, red. Opens to a beautiful foyer. Off to one side, an amazing dining room, kitchen, sun room, a little breakfast nook. Huge windows. Everywhere. Light everywhere. On the other side of the house, a beautiful family room. With a huge stone fire place. And more huge windows. Letting in lots and lots of sunlight. One big hallway upstairs with bedrooms on both sides. And at the end of the hallway, a little staircase leading up to the attic. We want every space in our dream home to be livable. The attic will be filled with pillows, blankets, beds, couches, lots of pretty fabric draped all over the place. Little white twinkle lights, and of course, cute little windows to let in the light. We want the attic to be one big cozy nook. In fact, we want cozy little nooks all over our house. We want a big basement. Perfect for watching movies, and playing. We want a beautiful backyard. With a pool. And a hot tub. Lots of beautiful green grass, and flowers. Off to one side of our house, we want gardens. We want to grow our own vegetables and fruits. Off to the other side of the house, we want a huge detached garage. A super big garage to put our cars in, a space to work on them, to store things. The top level of the garage will be a big man cave. Where all the men folk can go hang out, and get a beer at the bar, and watch sports and movies. We also want a tiny little barn where we can keep some chickens for fresh eggs. And a goat so we can make our own cheese. And because goats are really cute and funny. We want our house to be cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. We want it to be a place where we grow old together. The house where we live for the rest of our lives. We want it to be lit with warm ambient lights at night. We want it to beckon to our family and friends. We want it to be inviting, and warm, and cozy, and homey.

Maybe around six or seven years ago, Matt and I were sitting in my car in front of our first house together in Lorton. We were renting. Matt was working at a sign shop. And I was working at Starbucks. We were going nowhere. And, in fact, we were making a huge mess of our lives and our marriage. We sat in my car, and we listed all the things we needed to do to get where we are today. It was a low point. Listing everything that we had to do. It seemed impossible. But, we weren't dreaming. We had a defining moment. We knew what we wanted for our lives, and we made it happen. It took us years, but we made it. Every goal we made, we reached. Matt became a firefighter. I graduated from college. We bought a house. We made it a home when we brought home our first baby.

As Matt and I sat in the car talking about our dream home last night, I asked him, "these aren't just dreams, right? We're going to make this happen, right?" His answer: "Yes. We are going to make this happen." And you know what? I realized that the name, "dream home," is the wrong name. It should be called our, "future home." Because I realized last night...we're not dreaming. We had a defining moment. And defining moments are what give you the fuel to make dreams become real.

Thankful for dreams that pave the way for defining moments. And while we wait for our future home, I'm ever, so very thankful for the beautiful home we have now. I'm thankful that Matt and I are here. And that our defining moment those many years back is now--reality. We are so blessed.

Look at those socks! That is a result of Casey and Adelyn digging, and playing in dirt today. With no shoes on. Just socks. Sometimes kids just need to get good and dirty.
